APSO Initiative is a collective effort
The Africa Philanthropy Support Organizations (APSO) Initiative was launched in order to increase awareness, make connections, and build relationships among organizations inside and outside of Africa working to promote philanthropy to benefit African communities. Through this collective communications effort, APSO strengthens the impact, expands the reach, and leverage the resources of philanthropy in support of equity and social justice across the African continent.

APSO Initiative grew from a simple idea to connect.
Over the past decade the number of organizations interested in leveraging philanthropy in support of African communities has increased. It is clear that connecting and communicating the value of this vast array of organizations inside and outside of Africa would strengthen the field. But such an effort requires building relationships among a diverse network of organizations working on different continents and time zones.
Discussions began in July 2015, at the Africa Philanthropy Network (APN) Conference in Tanzania. In April 2016, at the Africa Grantmakers’ Affinity Group (AGAG) Conference in New Jersey, organizations based in African countries and the United States were invited to discuss the idea of coming together under the framework of the APSO Initiative. In October 2016, AGAG, APN and East Africa Association of Grantmakers (EAAG) hosted a meeting in South Africa and invited other select philanthropy support organizations from across Africa to discuss the APSO Initiative. At this meeting they agreed on what would later become the APSO Initiative’s main objective : to work together to increase awareness, make connections, and build relationships among organizations working to leverage philanthropy to benefit African communities.
In 2017, the APSO Initiative launched a website and podcast to share information about philanthropy support organizations focusing on Africa and to highlight the work of the people and organizations involved in the initiative.
The APSO Initiative is a communication effort to highlight the diverse ways philanthropy can be leveraged to benefit African communities. The initiative explores what is possible when organizations come together to support each other and promote philanthropy's contribution to social justice and equity for African communities.
